Greenville County EMS: South Carolina Large EMS System of the Year and Accredited Emergency Medical Dispatch Center of Excellence
Dynamic, High Performance, Life Saving: Those are just a few words used to describe Greenville County EMS,
which has been named the South Carolina Large EMS System of the Year. The recognition of the EMS team came at
the yearly South Carolina EMS symposium. The performance and results that led to the award are on display
every hour of every day.
Greenville County EMS, the sole 911/ALS provider of EMS services in South Carolina’s most populated
county, operates within a high performance system that routinely executes at a greatly respected 90%
response time for Delta and Echo calls. The more than 200 highly trained field providers includes 166
certified paramedics that provide outstanding service to a geographical area of close to 800 square miles
and includes intense urban settings and remote mountainous locations.
The Greenville County EMS Communication Center has earned accreditation from the "Emergency Medical
Dispatch Center of Excellence" from the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED). Greenville
County is one of only 155 Emergency Medical Dispatch Centers in the world to be awarded this highest
distinction for comprehensive implementation and compliance with the Medical Priority Dispatch System
(MPDS) and associated "20 Points of Excellence". Greenville County EMS Communication Specialists use
MPDS policy and protocol when handling 911 calls. Proper execution of these standards allows the call
takers to evaluate the emergency, provide pre-arrival instructions for patients, and dispatch the
proper assets.
