Greenville County EMS operates its own EMS Communications system known as “MedCom.” Functioning as a secondary communications center, MedCom handles
all EMS and additional 20 of the 31 fire department call-taking and dispatch functions. All telecommunicators are trained to the Emergency Medical
Dispatch (EMD) level and each call is categorized and prioritized using the Medical Priority Dispatch System. MedCom has earned accreditation as a
Center of Excellence by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch for multiple years.
Beyond dispatching, MedCom’s expert team serves as system status controllers, strategically positioning ambulances in high-demand areas based on historical data to optimize response times.
Greenville County EMS provides communications training to all new telecommunicators. No prior experience or certification is required.
Several telecommunicators are trained as tactical dispatchers, deploying with the Greenville County Emergency Response Team to support special
operations incidents. From life-saving coordination to on-the-ground tactical support, MedCom is at the heart of emergency response in Greenville County.
