School Notifications

The Sheriff's Office is implementing a direct notification system for schools and other child care facilities when major incidents are occurring that would affect the operations and safety of the school. This notification will be made utilizing OnSolve Code Red Emergency Alerts. At this time, a notification (phone call, text, and/or email) may include a recommendation for either a "Secure" or "Lockdown" response due to events that are nearby and would be sent to the principal, administrator, or other person(s) in charge of the school/daycare location. The message would include the area of the incident for you to determine how close you are and what safety steps you should take. The following is an explanation of terminology currently in use by the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. Follow this link for additional information regarding the standard response protocol: https://iloveuguys.org/The-Standard-Response-Protocol.html.

What is Secure?

Actions to take may include but are not limited to the following: Exterior doors locked, inside school can operate as normal. Once a secure response has been implemented and students and staff are all inside, no one should be allowed into the school during this time. Everyone already inside stays inside and students and staff outside when a secure is called should move back inside the school. This is used when a threat exists in the area of the school. Examples when this may be recommended are incidents in the community where it is unsafe to be outside but there is no known threat to persons inside a secured/locked school building.

What is a Lockdown?

Actions to take may include but are not limited to the following: Exterior doors should be locked. Once everyone has moved into the lockdown position, no movement should occur within the building. All persons inside should cease activities and actively follow lockdown procedures. Emergency procedures for each classroom to be locked, no sound, and for students, staff, and visitors in the building to go somewhere out of sight. Persons outside should determine the safest place to go away from the possible threat. The threat may be inside the building or close enough outside and severe enough that emergency actions should be taken.

Who should register?

This notification system is designed for the principal, administrator, or other person(s) in charge of the school. This is not a parent notification system. The person in charge of the school building who would like your school to be notified should provide us your school and contact information by using the button below.

Once your school contact information is initially submitted, a representative of the Greenville Sheriff's Office will contact you to verify the information that has been submitted.

* Be advised, the Code Red Alert System cannot guarantee notification of every single incident that may occur near your location. These limitations exist due to Sheriff's Office personnel availability, varying hours of operation for schools, and the rapidly evolving nature of law enforcement incidents, among other factors. In the event that your school believes a "Secure" or "Lockdown" is appropriate, but you have not received an alert, you should not wait for a notification from the system before initiating the applicable procedure. Notwithstanding the use of this system, Schools retain the responsibility for managing their own safety protocols and procedures.
