The Traffic Education program offers an alternative to sentencing for persons who commit traffic-related offenses that are punishable only by a fine and loss of four points or less. The program will educate the driver while giving the opportunity to have eligible tickets dismissed, therefore maintaining a good driving record.
Who qualifies for the TEP program?
To qualify for the program you must:
  • Have a violation that is 4 points or less.
  • No significant history of traffic violations.
  • Not previously participated in the TEP program. Prior PTI or AEP clients are eligible.
A DMV driving record will be run to verify the number of current points against the applicant's driver's license.
How do I apply?
To apply to the program you must:
  • Provide a valid driver’s license, learner’s permit or picture identification.
  • Provide a social security card or a printout from the social security office.
  • Pay a non-refundable fee of $280. Two (2) separate money orders for $140 each, made payable to the Traffic Education Program. All fees must be paid at the time of application. Cash, personal checks or credit cards are not accepted.
Orientation is held the second Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. and should last approximately one (1) hour.
What will I be required to do while in the program?
To successfully complete the program, you will be required to:
  • Complete four (4) hours of community service work at a non-profit agency.
  • Complete a four (4) hour defensive driving class.
How long does the program last?
Under South Carolina Law § 17-22-330, each ticket must be monitored by the Traffic Education Program for six months from the date of arrest. You can not receive another traffic violation for a 6 month period following the issuance of the ticket for which you have entered TEP.
What happens if I am terminated from the program?
Your case will be closed and returned to the referring Court for prosecution.
What happens after I successfully complete the program?
The Court will be notified to dismiss the ticket(s). You will be eligible to apply to the Solicitor's Office for an expungement of the ticket(s) from your driving record.
