WHAT THE RESIDENTS OF GREENVILLE COUNTY SAID

There were numerous suggestions and views expressed by the public during this process. The concerns most often expressed include:

Traffic congestion is a concern of many Greenville County residents. This gridlock once limited to the Haywood Road area is now a typical occurrence in other parts of Greenville County.

Traffic Congestion and Lack of Adequate Road Improvements - Traffic congestion, the length of time it takes to complete road improvements, and the lack of adequate roads in some areas were frequently mentioned. The past reduction in GTA service also was mentioned at several meetings.

Managed Growth - Proactive planning and the management of growth goes hand-in-hand with protecting our farmland and rural mountainous areas. Many citizens indicated that land preservation and growth management were critical to Greenville County's future.

Suburban Sprawl - Many citizens said that the construction of residential subdivisions beyond the urban area strains the infrastructure capacity in rural areas. The commercial uses and often non-residential uses that often follow the subdivisions also contribute to an increase in traffic congestion and flooding problems. This sprawl detracts from characteristics that first attracted the residents to the rural areas of Greenville.

Preservation of Farmland and Open Space - The preservation of open space and farm- land is widely perceived as crucial to maintaining our high quality of life. Of particular concern was preserving the rural mountainous areas in northern Greenville County and the rural agricultural areas in southern Greenville County.

Preserving farmland is key to protecting our high quality of life.
