Citizens of Greenville County:
The Greenville County Planning Commission is pleased to present you with a summary of the county's new Comprehensive Plan. The year-long planning process, called Designing Our Destiny, involved literally hundreds of citizens throughout the county. We especially want to thank those of you who took the time to actively participate in the planning process.
We are also indebted to the Greenville County Council, the School District of Greenville County, Western Carolina Regional Sewer Authority, Metropolitan Sewer Sub-District, and the Greenville Water System for providing their financial support.
Through surveys and attendance at community meetings, citizens helped us formulate many of the goals and objectives that are contained in this report. They also worked with our staff to develop a future land use map that shows how Greenville County should develop through the year 2020.
The plan's recommendations address many of the issues that were identified. School overcrowding, traffic congestion, the need for more greenways, and urban sprawl were among the issues most often mentioned. We are already working with citizens in southern Greenville County to expand zoning in this predominantly rural area of the county. Other initiatives are also underway.
The information contained in the plan can help local officials identify the community facilities that will be needed to serve the county's projected population. Since Greenville County is the most populated county in the state, and one of the fastest growing, we cannot afford to address problems after they occur. For this reason, one value of the plan is in the insight it provides.
Best Regards,
F. James Forbes, Director
