The Greenville Transit Authority's (GTA)
Long-Range Plan calls
for expanded routes and longer hours of service.
Recommendations:
Encourage pedestrian, bicycle and public transit travel
Amend the county subdivision regulations to encourage sidewalks in new subdivisions
Develop sidewalks and trails as alternate transportation facilities connecting future light rail systems, high density arm, and public facilities and employment areas
Identify, reserve, and use abandoned railroad rights-of-way for either light rail, bike trails, or pedestrian greenways
Goal - To promote a land use pattern that minimizes traffic impacts and encourages transit use.
Objectives:
To proactively plan the county's road improvement plan in anticipation of new development so that the resulting traffic will not approach or exceed the carrying capacity of the nearby road system
To continue to support a public transportation system in Greenville County
To provide for the public's safety on county roads through a regular program of inspection and maintenance
To continue to support the Greenville Area Transportation Study (GRATS) Policy Coordinating committee
Recommendations:
Encourage higher density residential development in the urban area where the infrastructure is most developed and ride sharing and transit services are most likely to be available
Expand GTA routes and the scheduled hours of operation
Expand transit service from neighborhoods to major employment centers
Address the need to improve air quality in Greenville County's future transportation improvements
Ensure that the county's transportation and land use decisions are mutually supportive
Adopt a proactive road improvement plan that provides for intersection improvements on roads in emerging growth areas before they become congested
Identify corridors where future public transportation ill be needed to promote a land use mix that could benefit by a transit system
Promote road designs that minimize impacts on existing residential neighborhoods

Planning now for increased volumes of traffic
at the I-85/I-385 interchange is key.
