Greenville County Planning Commission

Protecting beautiful natural resources such as Matthews Creek should be
an essential part of the planning process for the future.

Natural Resources Element

Planning for Greenville's future is inextricably linked to our available natural resources. Without a thorough assessment of natural resources, it is very difficult to avoid depletion or befouling of these assets.

The natural resources element reviewed the following issues:

Through an analysis of these issues, a strategy for environmental health was developed. This strategy combines a number of different projects and plans for Greenville County. Each of these projects will serve to manage growth so that various natural systems are not exploited in the course of rapid development.

In the areas where rapid development has occurred and where continued development may likely occur, a greenway will be encouraged. The greenways will protect needed open space, preserve water quality, stabilize stream banks, and inhibit development in flood-prone areas.

NATURAL RESOURCES GOALS, OBJECTIVES, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Goal - To conserve and protect Greenville County's natural resources

Objectives:

  1. To be a responsible steward of the natural environment, such as improving air quality, water quality, conserving resources, and reducing flooding

  2. To continually improve air quality as the county grows through comprehensive programs, policies, and implementation

  3. To provide a balanced system of open lands, natural areas, recreation spaces, and parks, including trails and greenways; to preserve and protect important natural areas
  4. To maintain high standards that ensure clean water quality

  5. To continue strong waste reduction, recycling, and solid waste management programs

Many natural resources call for special attention, such as stabilizing stream banks
to minimize flooding of rivers and streams like the Reedy River in downtown Greenville.
