2005 Robert Wilson Housing Head Start Fund Walk

This event was part of the American Dream Housing Fair, held on November 12th, 2005 for the first time at the Palmetto Exposition Center. The Marshall for the event was local realtor C. Dan Joyner. The Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS applied for and received a $5000.00 grant from the National Association of REALTORS Ambassadors For Cities Program. The City of Greenville's Department of Community Development and the Greenville County Human Relations Commission became partners with GGAR in this effort. Freddie Mac later matched this grant with one of their own. Awards were presented by the National Association of Realtors through a program of the US Conference of Mayors during the opening program just prior to the Walk. Recipients of the awards were the City of Greenville's Department of Community Development, the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors, and the Greenville County Human Relations Commission. Iona Harrison, of The National Association of REALTORS Housing Opportunity Program and Dave Gatton, with The Council for Investment in the New American City for the US Conference of Mayors presented plaques to all three partners in a program just prior to the walk. The funds from the original grant were to be used in a housing fair scheduled for November 12, 2005 at the Palmetto Exposition Center, but the partners quickly agreed to add a fund-raising walk. The walk was named after Robert Wilson, a former County employee, and the first Homebuyer Education "Key Program" Coordinator with the Greenville County Human Relations Commission, who died suddenly in 2004. The funds were earmarked to be used in the Key Program by first-time home buyers for the initial cost of needed items or services when moving into their new home. The Robert Wilson Housing Head Start Fund Walk raised over $28,000.00. Links
