The 2006 Robert Wilson Housing Head Start Fund Walk was held this year in Cleveland
Park at 9am. The walk was named after Robert Wilson, a former County employee, and
the first Homebuyer Education "Key Program" Coordinator with the Greenville County
Human Relations Commission, who died suddenly in 2004. The funds were earmarked to be
used in the Key Program by first-time home buyers for the initial cost of needed items
or services when moving into their new home. The Robert Wilson Housing Head Start Fund
Walk raised over $20,000.00.
The 2006 American Dream Housing Fair followed the Robert Wilson Housing Head Start
Fund Walk on October 15th at the Palmetto Exposition Center, from 10am 2pm.
Two education seminars were presented on understanding credit and taking the fear
out of owning a first home. An exhibit area for over 30 sponsors was provided for the
participants to provide direct contact with vendors of preferred services. Bus tours
of available and future home sites were provided throughout the fair by the City
of Greenville, the Greenville housing Authority, and Greenville Redevelopment
Authority. Participants were provided lunch. Door prizes were carefully selected
for their use in a new home. Hispanic staff members of the Greenville County Human
Relations Commission were on hand to address any language issues.
A homebuyer education class was in progress during the entire day at the same site.
Free credit reports were provided to recipients and counseling appointments were made
for a future date at the Human Relations Commission. Over 100 persons attended the
Fair this year in their effort to buy their first home.
