The Section is staffed on a twenty-four hour, seven-day per week basis. All employees of the Crime Scene Section are commissioned police officers, certified by the State of South Carolina, and must have at least two years of prior service as a commissioned law enforcement officer. Although not currently required, most employees have college degrees in related fields of study. Employees routinely receive advanced forensic training in areas such as blood spatter analysis, fingerprint matters, DNA evidence collection, accident investigation, and homicide investigation. The Crime Scene Section maintains a digital database of photographs taken on crime scenes. In an effort to provide more efficient and customer-oriented services to client agencies, this system has been networked to the Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor's Office, Greenville County Sheriff's Office, Greenville Police Department, and Greenville County Coroner's Office. This system allows "read only" access to the database of photographs and gives the ability to print photographs from the database. Video analysis services are provided to client agencies. This has proven extremely beneficial in cases where surveillance video is available and needed for investigative or judicial purposes. Employees are responsible for the follow up processing of evidence collected from the crime scene along with the preparation of detailed reports detailing the crime scene investigation. Crime Scene Investigators are required to give testimony in judicial proceedings on a regular basis regarding their crime scene investigations and actions taken. |
