Purpose(s)/Service(s): provides for vocational and technical education. Enabling Legislation: Acts
of the SC General Assembly Nos. 323 (1961); 743 (1962); 193 (1967); 1141 (1968); 599 (1992).
Act No. 743 established the Greenville County Commission for Technical Education as an administrative
agency of Greenville County. The commission consists of ten qualified registered electors of Greenville
County as follows:
- The governor appoints seven members to the commission upon recommendation of a majority of Greenville County Council,
- The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the School District of Greenville County (ex-officio),
- The Superintendent of Education of the School District of Greenville County (ex-officio),
- An executive officer of the Greenville Higher Education Center Advisory Council (ex-officio).
Members serve for terms of three years in the same manner as those originally appointed. Commission
members hold office until their successors have been appointed and qualify.
Powers and Duties:
The commission is authorized to promote the objectives established in Section 23 of Act 323 (1961)
and empowered as follows:
- To adopt and use a corporate seal,
- To adopt bylaws, rules and regulations for the conduct of business and expenditure of funds as it deems
advisable,
- To acquire site in Greenville County and construct, equip, and maintain appropriate facilities in
accordance to the standards and specifications included in Section 23 of Act 323 (1961),
- To acquire by gift or purchase all kinds of real and personal property, accept gifts, grants, donations,
devises and bequests,
- To provide necessary administrative services required by the State program,
- To employ personnel that enable the commission to fulfill its functions,
- To establish reasonable rules and regulations, in conjunction with those promulgated by the State, for
the operation of its facilities,
- To expend funds received in any manner for the operation, maintenance and improvement of the
facilities,
- To apply for, receive, and expend moneys from all governmental agencies.
The commission shall complete an audit within four months following the close of its fiscal year through
a qualified public account. The commission shall then file with the Clerk of Court for Greenville County
and the Secretary of the Greenville County Legislative Delegation copies of the audit report.
Founded in 1962, Greenville Technical College is an accredited, state-supported institution of higher
learning dedicated to providing affordable, quality educational opportunities to residents throughout
the Greenville, South Carolina metropolitan area. The college has 55 Advisory Committees with a total
of over 750 representatives from business, industry and educational institutions. The college is accredited
by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
This commission is responsible for promoting and developing vocational and technical education within
Greenville County to help meet the needs for skilled personnel in an area of rapid industrial expansion.
This commission meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 12:30 p.m. in the Greenville Technical College,
Board Room at the Greenville Campus.
