Greenville County Museum of Art Commission

Purpose(s)/Service(s): provides for art opportunity.
Enabling Legislation: Act of SC General Assembly No. 537 of 1963; County Council Ordinance No. 1043 effective October 19, 1982.

Pursuant to Section 3 of Act No. 283 of the 1975 Acts and Joint Resolutions of the General Assembly, Greenville County Council Ordinance No. 1043 effective October 19, 1982 reorganized and restructured the Greenville County Museum Commission. The commission consists of seven (7) members. County Council is the appointive authority and may receive recommendations from the Greenville County Art Association, Inc. All members shall be residents of Greenville County. County Council considers the knowledge or interest in the arts and should make efforts to assure that various geographic areas of the county are represented.

The commission exercises general control and manages the museum and art center. The commission collects and preserves museum pieces and art objects for public exhibition in order to enhance the cultural life of the community. The museum also serves as an educational center offering classes to further the knowledge of art and art appreciation. The commission shall make periodic reports, no less frequently than once a year, to the Greenville County Council, summarizing its activities and showing its financial status.

The commission meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 12:00 noon in the Museum Lecture Studio.
