Canebrake Fire District

Purpose(s)/Service(s): Fire Protection.
Enabling Legislation: Greenville County Council Ordinance No. 1325.
Pursuant to South Carolina Code: 4-9/19/21; 4-9-30(5).

Chapters 19 and 21 of Title 4 of the 1976 South Carolina Code of Laws, as amended (hereinafter called the "Code") and Section 4-9-30(5)(a) of said Code authorizes County Council to provide fire protection services in certain unincorporated areas of the County as set forth in said Chapters of the Code. Pursuant to that authority, Ordinance 1325 created the Canebrake Fire District and its Board of Fire Control as the governing body. The Canebrake Fire District’s Board of Fire Control consists of five (5) members who serve for three (3) year staggered terms and are appointed by County Council.

Powers and Responsibilities
The Board has the following authority:

  • To establish, operate and maintain a system of fire protection in the fire service area known as the Canebrake Fire District;
  • To purchase, subject to funds available, such fire-fighting equipment as it deems necessary for the purpose of controlling fires within said fire service area;
  • To select sites or places within the service areas where the fire-fighting equipment shall be kept;
  • To employ all necessary fire protection personnel and fix their compensation;
  • To employ and supervise the training of firemen to insure that the equipment shall be utilized for the best interest of all service areas within the county;
  • To be responsible for the purchase, acquisition, upkeep, maintenance and repairs of all fire fighting equipment and fire stations and the sites thereof;
  • To promulgate such rules and regulations as it may deem proper and necessary to insure that the equipment is being used to the best advantage of the county and to carry out the provisions of this chapter;
  • To construct the necessary buildings to house the equipment authorized herein, and all fire stations necessary to provide an adequate fire protection system;
  • To appoint officers, agents, employees and servants, to prescribe the duties of such, to fix their compensation and to determine if and to what extent they shall be bonded for the faithful performance of their duties;
  • To exercise any and all other powers necessary to operating and maintaining a system of fire protection.
