District 20
Sid Cates grew up in Charlotte and came to Greenville to attend Bob Jones University where he graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1969. He received an M.S. from Clemson University in 1971 and began teaching high school math and science in Charlotte shortly after graduation. In 1974 he became principal of the high school where he taught and served in that capacity for 9 years. He returned to Greenville in 1983 and finished his Ed.D. degree at Bob Jones University in Educational Leadership in 1984.

In 1985 he was appointed principal of Bob Jones Academy and fulfilled this position for 11 years before being appointed Educational Director of BJ LINC, the live distance learning program of high school courses broadcast to schools and homeschoolers nationwide. After ten years at BJ LINC, Cates returned to Bob Jones Academy as principal while still maintaining his position as Educational Director of BJ LINC.

Cates has held various offices in education associations, including the presidency of the North Carolina Christian Educators Association. He has also served as vice-chairman on the Board of Trustees of the Greenville County Public Library system. Cates served as a deacon and adult Sunday school teacher at his church for many years. He is a frequent speaker at educational conferences.

Councilor Cates serves on the Public Safety and Human Services Committee and the Finance Committee.

He and his wife, Candy, have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Councilor Cates was elected in May 2007 to represent District 20.
