REGISTRATION PROCEDURES
How to Register a Vehicle

Before you can register your vehicle with the SC Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV), you must pay the property taxes that are required in the county in which you reside. To get a tax bill in Greenville County, you must present your vehicle information and proof of residency to the Greenville County Auditor’s Office. If you are transferring an active tag, you may not need to pay property taxes; go directly to the SCDMV to begin the registration process.

Documents Needed:

If you are registering a vehicle for the first time in Greenville County, you will need to provide one of the following documents:

  1. Vehicle title
  2. Certificate of origin
  3. Registration
  4. Bill of sale

You must also bring proof of your residency in Greenville County. SCDMV approved proof of SC address can be found here: Proof of Residency.

Step One: Get a Property Tax Bill

To obtain a tax bill, you can present the vehicle documentation and proof of residency at our office location, by mail, fax, or email. Please do not mail original documents.

    Step Two: Get a Paid Property Tax Receipt

    You can pay your property tax bill at the Tax Collector’s department. You can also pay online. For information on accepted payment types, paying online, and getting a qualified receipt, please visit the Tax Collector’s website.

    Note: The SCDMV does not currently accept receipts from our website. If you pay online, a receipt will be mailed to you within 5-10 days.

    Step Three: Register Your Vehicle with the SCDMV
